25th June 2026 when temperatures peaked at @ 41 degrees Celcious, starting before 7.30am & all completed by 10am, it was shearing day at Triscombe Farm. Here is a little story for children …..

On a bright summer morning on Exmoor, just before the heather is purple, the whortleberries are ready to pick, but the breeze smelled like warm grass from haymaking, a little sheep named Larry woke up feeling… well… very fluffy.

Larry wasn’t just any sheep. He was the fluffiest sheep on the whole hillside. His fleece was so big that birds sometimes mistook him for a cloud that had rolled down from the sky.

But today was a special day. It was Shearing Day.

Larrys’s friends were already trotting toward the farmyard. Brenda the lamb bounced along excitedly, and Winston the ram walked proudly, remembering all the shearing days he’d seen.

Woolly wasn’t so sure.

“What if it tickles too much?” he wondered. “What if I look funny afterwards?” he added, imagining himself as a tiny sheep with no fluff at all.

✂️ The Friendly Shearers

When Larry reached the barn, the friendly shearer, the two Farmer Atkins, both gave him a warm smile.

“Don’t you worry, Larry,” she said. “It’s just a little haircut. You’ll feel lighter, cooler, and ready for summer adventures.”

Larry gulped but nodded bravely.

Farmer Atkins younger gently sat him down in the special shearing position — the one that makes sheep feel calm and safe. Then the clippers began their soft bzzzzzz.

It tickled. It wiggled. It made Larry giggle so much his ears wobbled.

🧺 A Whole New Larry

Before he knew it, his fleece came off in one big, fluffy blanket. Sally rolled it up proudly — though she rolled herself up in it by accident first.

Larry stood up and shook himself.

“Oh!” he gasped.

He felt light as a feather, fast as the wind, and cool as a cucumber. He could run! He could jump! He could see his own knees for the first time ever.

His friends cheered.

“You look very handsome,” said . “You look very zoomy,” said Herbie the wether lamb. “You look ready for summer,” said Farmer Atkins senior.

And Larry felt it too.

🌄 A Perfect Exmoor Evening

That evening, Larry and his flock grazed on the soft Exmoor hillside. The sun dipped low, painting the moor in gold. Larry smiled.

Shearing Day wasn’t scary at all. It was helpful. It was healthy, and it made him feel like the best version of himself.

He couldn’t wait to grow his fleece again — just in time for next year’s big summer snip.
