Under the famously dark skies of Exmoor, Triscombe Farm (TA24 7HA) has become a beacon for curious minds thanks to the passion and expertise of Jo and Pete Richardson, the duo behind the beloved Space Detective events. Their mission is simple but powerful: to make the wonders of the universe accessible, exciting, and unforgettable for everyone.

Meet Jo & Pete Richardson: The Heart of Space Detectives Jo and Pete are natural educators — warm, enthusiastic, and endlessly knowledgeable. Their backgrounds in astronomy outreach, science communication, and hands‑on learning shape every event they run. What sets them apart is their ability to turn complex cosmic ideas into stories and experiences that spark genuine awe.

They’re not just astronomy hosts; they’re guides, storytellers, and cosmic companions, helping visitors of all ages feel at home under the stars.

Triscombe Farm sits on the edge of Exmoor National Park, one of Europe’s first International Dark Sky Reserves. Its natural landscape makes it ideal for astronomy and a perfect cosmic base with :Wide, open fields with unobstructed horizons, minimal light pollution, quiet, peaceful surroundings and easy access from nearby villages and the A396

When Jo and Pete set up their telescopes here, the farm becomes a gateway to the universe.

Each Space Detective event, day or after dark is a blend of science, storytelling, and hands‑on exploration. Jo and Pete design their sessions to be immersive, playful, and deeply educational. In adverse weather, events are indoors using a planetarium so it is advisable to book early to avoid disappointment.

Before darkness falls, guests have the opportunity to explore interactive stations which may include:

  • Meteorite handling
  • Build‑your‑own‑planet activities
  • Crater‑making experiments
  • Solar system scale challenges

🔭 Once the sky darkens with guided telescope viewing or in the planetarium,  Jo and Pete lead visitors through:

  • Planet spotting (Jupiter, Saturn, Mars depending on season)
  • Deep‑sky objects like the Pleiades or Andromeda
  • Star clusters and nebulae
  • The Milky Way arching overhead

Their explanations make the night sky feel alive — full of stories, physics, and hidden wonders.

Jo’s constellation storytelling is a highlight, part science lesson, part theatre, part cosmic meditation . Jo weaves together: Ancient myths, cultural astronomy as well as modern scientific discoveries

📸 Pete, a Professional Astrophotographer often shares tips for capturing the night sky with: Smartphones, DSLRs and tripods and long‑exposure techniques

Space Detective events are loved by :

    • Families seeking an inspiring adventure
    • Couples looking for a magical evening
    • Amateur astronomers wanting dark‑sky access
    • WIs, Gentleman clubs, school groups of all ages and youth clubs

Jo and Pete have a gift for making everyone feel welcome — from total beginners to seasoned stargazers. They have turned Triscombe Farm into one of Exmoor’s most magical astronomical destinations.
